FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

(1.) How do I enter a starting balance?

When you are just starting, you need to pick a day to start tracking all your accounts. Then enter adjustment transactions to get the starting balance into the accounts for those days. The closing balance of your last statements is the easiest, but you can go back as far as you want and enter transaction up to the present also.

To enter a new balance as an adjustment, click the "New Transaction" button, then select "Adjustment" as the type of transaction. Then enter the date, 'Beginning Balance' as the reason, and the amount. This can be either a positive or negative number. A negative beginning balance would be used if you want to keep track a credit card, or a loan.

Later on, if you are transferring money into a new account from an account that you are already tracking, you would use a transfer transaction to move money into the new account.

(2.) Is Personal Ledger a double entry accounting package?

No, Personal Ledger is a single entry ledger that can be used to track multiple accounts. While Personal Ledger will inform you of mismatched transfers, it's only purpose is to help you locate errors. In double entry accounting, all entries must be entered into two accounts. In Personal ledger, only transfers from one account to another use double entries.

(3.) How do I print out my ledgers?

At this time Personal Ledger does not have printing capabilities. I will be adding the ability to print reports soon. If you need any particular types of reports, now would be a good time to email me with your suggestions.
